Meet the Yamaha YZF-R9, while Yamaha doesn’t state it’s a successor to the widely-acclaimed YZF-R6, it looks every bit like an evolution of it. This is Yamaha's statement that a middleweight supersport can be both track-capable and approachable, built for riders who want real performance without the punishing compromises that come with a full-litre machine. At the heart of the R9 is Yamaha's celebrated 890 cc liquid-cooled, DOHC inline triple-cylinder CP3 engine — the same bloodline that powers the MT-09 — tuned here for supersport duty, 118 hp at 10,000 rpm and 93 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm.

The CP3 is well-loved for a reason: it delivers a broad, usable torque curve that keeps the bike exciting at low speeds and ferocious at the top end, paired with a six-speed gearbox and a slipper clutch for confident, smooth downshifts under hard braking. At just 195 kg wet — thanks in part to the lightest aluminum Deltabox frame ever fitted to a Yamaha supersport — the R9 feels far nimbler than its numbers suggest, with a near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution that makes every corner feel dialed in from the first turn.

Where the R9 truly earns its reputation is in the details that matter most to riders who push their machines. Fully adjustable KYB inverted forks up front and a rear monoshock with a class-first low-speed valve keep the chassis planted and composed whether you're chasing lap times or carving up a mountain pass. Brembo Stylema monoblock front calipers gripping dual 320mm discs deliver the kind of braking performance and feel you'd expect from a factory race bike.

The electronics suite is equally serious: a six-axis IMU feeds data into a nine-mode Traction Control System, three-mode Slide Control, Lift Control, and Brake Control — all supported by ride-by-wire throttle and multiple riding modes. MotoGP-inspired front winglets, aggressive aerodynamic fairings, and the signature M-shaped front duct round out a design that turns heads without trying.

With Philippine pricing starting at around P899,000 the YZF-R9 slots into the market as one of the most technically sophisticated motorcycles around.
