TVS launches new Orbiter electric scooter in India
Could an affordable electric scooter like this work in the Philippines?
TVS Motor Company is a household name in India. For decades it has built scooters and motorcycles that are tough enough for daily use yet affordable enough for the masses. The brand also has a global footprint, selling in more than 60 countries, and even stepped in to revive Norton in 2020, showing both scale and ambition. That mix of experience and vision helps explain why its newest scooter, the TVS Orbiter, deserves attention.
The Orbiter slots below the iQube as an entry-level electric model. The price is set at ₹99,900, or about P65,000, which makes it one of the most accessible EVs in TVS’s lineup. Instead of chasing performance headlines, the company chose to focus on practicality and everyday usability.
Power comes from a hub-mounted motor paired with a 3.1kWh battery. TVS claims 158km on the Indian Driving Cycle, though real-world figures will be closer to 100–110km depending on conditions. Top speed is 68kph, putting it firmly in the urban commuter category. Two ride modes keep things simple: Eco stretches range while Power adds some urgency when overtaking.
Comfort and utility are key. The Orbiter runs a 14in front wheel—rare in this segment—which makes it steadier over potholes and rough pavement. Under the seat is a roomy 34L compartment, enough to swallow two helmets, while the 290mm footboard can carry a small bag. The seat itself is long at 845mm, leaving proper space for a passenger.
The scooter also stands out for its features. A color LCD shows calls, messages, and navigation alerts. Pair it with the SmartXConnect app and you unlock crash and fall alerts, geo-fencing, time fencing, and anti-theft notifications. Hill-hold, reverse assist, and even cruise control add layers of convenience usually reserved for pricier models. Over-the-air updates mean the software side can keep improving after you’ve bought the bike.
Would something like this work in the Philippines? In dense cities and suburban towns, definitely. The range, price point, and ease of use could hit the sweet spot for short commutes. The Orbiter shows how accessible electric two-wheelers can be when designed with real riders in mind.
Unfortunately, however, the Orbiter is sold exclusively in India. At least for now. That said, feel free to check out the rest of TVS' lineup in the comprehensive MotoDeal bike guide.
