Should Honda bring the new CUV e: electric scooter to the Philippines?
This practical and economical EV just launched in Europe and the UK.
Electric cars are quickly gaining traction in the Philippines. From compact hatchbacks to midsize crossovers, EVs are becoming a more familiar sight on our roads. But when it comes to two wheels, things are a little different. While e-bikes and scooters exist, adoption has been slow—especially among mainstream riders. That could be about to change.
Honda recently launched the CUV e: in the UK and Europe, a sleek, tech-forward electric scooter that revives the “Clean Urban Vehicle” nameplate from 30 years ago. But this time around, it’s smarter, sharper, and built for a connected urban lifestyle. It offers up to 72km of range (about 45 miles), a top speed of 80km/h, and runs on swappable lithium-ion batteries. Not exactly headline-grabbing specs—but maybe that’s the point.
What Honda’s doing here isn’t trying to wow you with numbers. Instead, the CUV e: focuses on usability, practicality, and integration. It has a reverse assist mode, USB-C charging, a smart key, and a 7-inch TFT screen fully connected to your phone via the new RoadSync Duo app. Navigation, calls, music, weather updates—it’s all there, built around the idea that this scooter should feel like an extension of your daily life.
So, could something like this work in Metro Manila? In many ways, yes. The size, range, and tech features are well suited to urban commuting. And if Honda can bring down the price point (and make charging infrastructure or battery swaps accessible), this could be a game-changer.
Of course, there are challenges. Our road conditions, limited charging options, and skepticism toward EV bikes are real hurdles. But if there’s any brand that can shift the mindset, it’s Honda. They're trusted, proven, and already part of the everyday Pinoy’s ride.
It’s too early to tell if the CUV e: or something like it will land here—but the writing’s on the wall. The EV revolution on two wheels might just be getting started.
