Several Motorcycle Manufacturers Suspend Production amidst COVID-19 Pandemic
KTM, Husqvarna, GasGas and Moto Morini among motorcycle brands to suspend manufacturing operations.
After the World Health Organization declared the novel Corona Virus (COVID-19) a pandemic last March 11, 2020, it would only be a matter of time before its consequences would be felt by the motorcycle industry. Among the first brands who decided to jump the gun and order a temporary stoppage of their operations are KTM, Husqvarna Motorcycles, GasGas and Moto Morini.
While KTM and Husqvarna share their main facility located in Mattighofen, Austria, an impending interruption from their supply chain coming from northern Italy prompted them to suspend their operations. Italy is among the first countries in Europe that ordered a countrywide lockdown as a measure to contain COVID-19. Pierer Mobility is the parent company of KTM, Husqvarna, and GasGas.
The measure aims to avoid a possible uncontrolled business interruption and anticipates parts of the company vacation in the summer to stabilize the supply chain in the long term. However, they assured that the temporary suspension would not affect the supply chain of spare parts globally. Adventure Cycle Philippines (ACP) is the exclusive distributor of KTM and Husqvarna motorcycles in the Philippines and they operate a manufacturing plant in Santa Rosa, Laguna. They now locally produce the Duke 200 and 390 among others, from their Laguna plant.
Moto Morini on the other hand, also decided to suspend its operations of their manufacturing plant located in Trivolzio, Italy. In an official statement, they said, “We are obviously worried, but also certain that we will overcome the emergency and start growing again. Italy has the ability to do it: we are a structurally strong country. We will surely overcome the crisis by acting with unity of purpose and spirit.” Italy is still struggling to contain the disease, despite being the first European country to go on lockdown.
Moto Morini continued saying, “To all those who have been working on the front lines since the beginning of the emergency, risking their safety to guarantee us a return to normal, our warmest thanks and the guarantee of our commitment to comply with the directives, which is the only way we have to really help them.” Italy has reported as much as 368 Corona Virus deaths in a single day despite lockdown. Moto Morini bikes are exclusively distributed in the Philippines by BikerBox, located in Sucat, Parañaque. Among the bikes they sell here are the Super Scrambler, and the Milano.
