Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade wins the 2020 Red Dot Award for design innovation
The Red Dot Design Award recognizes not only the Honda Fireblade's Design but also the creative process involved in its development.
The Red Dot Award, founded in 1955, is one of the most respected and prestigious design awards one could ever receive. While Honda has just released the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade, it already has received the prestigious Red Dot Design award for the innovations involved in its design and creation. The new Fireblade is already a powerhouse of a motorcycle with an engine designed with technologies derived from the RC213V MotoGP machine driven by champion driver Marc Marquez who continues to win world titles. This water-cooled 4-stroke DOHC 4-valve inline 4-cylinder 999cc engine of the Fireblade is the most powerful engine ever on a CBR. The motorcycle is built on a lightweight aluminum diamond frame from a thin-walled gravity mold casting method that enables high-precision rigidity tuning.
The new design of the Fireblade features a minimalist frontal area combined with the aggressively angled side fairings creating a best-in-class drag coefficient. Combine this with aerodynamic “winglets”, also present on their MotoGP machines, hugely increasing downforce and stability for ultimate control, even at high speeds.
Not only the result was recognized but also the innovation involved in the design process of developing the CBR-1000RR-R Fireblade. Its designers used a continuous feedback loop to create the maximum effect in the shortest possible development time making use of digital simulation while at the same time, drawing experience from the input they received from Honda Racing Corporation (HRC).
“The CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP was developed to win races in any category – from club racing to international competition. Its design and styling are led by that philosophy – with every part and every detail designed with speed, performance and aerodynamic efficiency in mind. We’re honored that it has been recognized with such a prestigious award.”

The Red Dot Award recognizes outstanding designs by giving out three awards, “Red Dot: Best of the Best”, “Red Dot”, and “Honorable Mention”. Surprisingly, the Fireblade was not the only Honda that won in the event. Honda’s ‘e’ electric car received “Best of the Best”, making them winners of two out of three awards.
