Hero MotoCorp: More small-displacement Harley-Davidsons coming soon

Thanks to the success of the X440, we can expect more small-displacement Harleys in the near future.

Hero MotoCorp: More small-displacement Harley-Davidsons coming soon

Hero MotoCorp isn’t just another motorcycle brand—it’s the world’s biggest by volume. For decades, it’s built simple, affordable machines that keep millions moving every day. That reach and experience made Hero the perfect partner when Harley-Davidson wanted to break into India with something more accessible.

The collaboration led to the Harley-Davidson X440 in 2023, a 440cc air-oil-cooled single making about 20kW and 38Nm. Modest numbers, sure, but the bike was built for real-world use, priced at around Rs 229,000 (about P160,000), and gave many riders their first chance to own a Harley. Hero even created its own spin-off, the Mavrick 440, though it quietly dropped from production earlier this year after failing to gain traction.

Now the platform is set for a second life. In a recent investor call, Hero confirmed a new Harley based on the 440 will debut before the end of September. Details are still under wraps, but the possibilities are wide open. A sportier street model could liven things up with sharper gearing and handling. A retro-styled roadster would put it directly against Royal Enfield’s Hunters and Classics. A lightweight cruiser ready for longer rides, or even a premium trim with upgraded suspension and brakes, would also make sense.

The big unknown is whether this bike will stay India-focused or head global. Southeast Asia, Latin America, and even parts of Europe could welcome a competitively priced 440 Harley, especially if it undercuts Enfield’s 450s while carrying the Harley badge. If it makes the leap to the US, it could test whether brand cachet alone can win over new riders at the entry level.

For everyday riders, what matters is that Hero and Harley are challenging the idea of what an affordable motorcycle can be. Instead of settling for basic commuters, we could see bikes with real character and brand presence at prices that don’t sting.
