BMW CE 02 electric motorcycle enters production in India
Would this compact electric motorcycle be ideal for Metro Manila's congested streets?
BMW and TVS Motor Company share a long-standing history, stemming from the G 310 range of entry-level motorcycles. While these motorcycles are labeled as entry-level in the US and European markets, they serve as an upgrade choice in the Asian market. This partnership now extends into the electric motorcycle realm with the introduction of the BMW CE 02, a compact electric bike designed primarily for urban commuting. This electric scooter, developed in collaboration with TVS Motor Company, has officially commenced production in India at TVS' manufacturing facility in Hosur, near Chennai.
From a technological perspective, the BMW CE 02 is driven by an electric motor delivering a maximum of 11 kilowatts, equivalent to around 15 horsepower. It produces a commendable 55 Newton-meters (44 pound-feet) of torque, though it's likely to feel even more robust in practice due to its consistent power delivery across the entire rev range. The electric model is equipped with a 2-kilowatt-hour battery pack, providing an estimated 56 miles of range per charge.
In terms of features, the CE 02 comes equipped with ride modes, LED lighting, and a convenient USB charging port for on-the-go convenience. Additionally, it incorporates keyless ignition, a 3.5-inch full-color TFT display, standard ABS, and a useful reverse gear for easier parking in confined spaces. The CE 02 rides on 14-inch wheels fitted with front and rear tires measuring 120/80 and 150/70, respectively. Its suspension setup comprises inverted forks and an adjustable monoshock linked to a single-sided swingarm at the rear.
When it is officially launched, the CE 02 is expected to offer various optional accessories such as a comfortable saddle, luggage sets, and a windscreen. While pricing and availability details for the Indian market are yet to be confirmed, it's anticipated to be more budget-friendly, considering its local production. This foray into electric motorcycles underscores the commitment of BMW and TVS to address the evolving needs of urban mobility. While it's not yet accessible in the Indian market, it will initially be exported to regions where its launch has been announced, including the US, where it's expected to be available at a starting retail price of $7,599, or the equivalent of around P430,000.
