Suzuki V-Strom 800DE versus Yamaha Tenere 700 - Head to head
Suzuki’s newest middleweight ADV certainly looks like it has what it takes to take on Yamaha’s tried and tested Tenere 700.
Middleweight adventure bikes have experienced significant growth in recent years as people have come to recognize that immense engine power is not necessarily a prerequisite for an enjoyable on and off-road experience. Instead, they have discovered the advantages of a nimble lightweight chassis, particularly when it comes to off-road riding.
Today's selection of middleweight engines offers an abundance of power for an exhilarating on-road experience. A prime example of this is the Yamaha Tenere 700, featuring the reliable and well-established CP2 engine. However, a newcomer has emerged in the local market—the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE. Considering the Tenere 700's established reputation as the standard in the adventure (ADV) segment, it's worth comparing these two bikes to see how they measure up against each other.
Performance
Let's begin by discussing the familiar Yamaha Tenere 700. It is equipped with a 689cc liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, parallel-twin engine. The engine's 270-degree crankshaft design is intended to replicate the power output and sound characteristics of a 90-degree V-twin. With 73.4 horsepower and 71 Nm of torque, it falls within the performance sweet spot often referred to as the "Goldilocks zone." The Tenere 700 weighs 205 kg, providing a manageable and agile riding experience.
On the other hand, the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE features a completely new engine. It boasts a larger 776cc liquid-cooled, fuel-injected parallel-twin configuration. Similar to the Tenere 700, it also utilizes a 270-degree crankshaft. However, due to its increased displacement, the V-Strom 800DE generates 85 horsepower and 78 Nm of torque, slightly surpassing the T7's output. It does come with a weight penalty, though, as it weighs 230 kg, which is 15 kg more than the Tenere 700. This additional weight may be noticeable, particularly when riding off-road.
Features
The Yamaha Tenere 700 has gained considerable popularity precisely because of its minimalistic approach to features. It offers only ABS, which can be easily disabled with a button press. It doesn't come with fancy ride modes, throttle by wire, or an elaborate full-color display. Instead, it focuses on delivering a no-frills adventure riding experience that is appreciated by many.
In contrast, Suzuki has embraced the technology trend wholeheartedly with the V-Strom 800DE. It boasts a full-color TFT display, multiple ride modes, traction control modes, and switchable ABS. These electronic aids cater to riders who may not possess the requisite skills to handle a machine like the Tenere 700, making the V-Strom 800DE an appealing choice for those seeking additional assistance and advanced features.
Price
Both the Yamaha Tenere 700 and Suzuki V-Strom 800DE are priced similarly, with the Tenere 700 retailing for P699,000. The price may seem high considering its minimalist features, but the appeal of the Tenere 700 lies in its simplicity, dependability, and no-frills off-road performance.
In contrast, the V-Strom 800DE commands a higher price tag of P699,000 but offers a range of impressive tech and performance features. It is equipped with advanced technology, gadgets, and customizable options, catering to riders who appreciate such features.
Ultimately, the choice between these two bikes depends on personal preferences and skill level. The Tenere 700, with its barebones nature, is better suited for experienced riders seeking an off-road capable machine. On the other hand, the V-Strom 800DE shines in both road and light off-road terrains, thanks to its comprehensive tech package, making it a suitable choice for riders who value advanced features and versatility.
