Here are a few up and coming innovative motorcycle tech features

The world of motorcycles is indeed very exciting for a multitude of reasons. Not only are today’s top-tier motorcycles, by their very nature, already fun, they also give us a glimpse of what’s to come especially when it comes to more affordable, entry-level bikes. Technology has always been at the forefront of the two-wheeled world, and manufacturers have seriously raised the bar in terms of features—be it for performance, safety, or convenience. 

Today, let’s put our nerd caps on and talk tech. More specifically, about the techie features we can expect to see in motorcycles in the near future. Now, some of the stuff on this list are already available on top-shelf machines worth millions of pesos. However, it certainly won’t be surprising if in a few years’ time these features will be more commonplace even on mid-tier, or maybe even entry-level motorcycles.

Six-axis IMU

Ducati Panigale Wheelie

This nifty piece of techie equipment is already available in several-high end motorcycles, particularly sportier, more performance-oriented models. A six-axis inertial measurement unit, or IMU, is responsible for giving a motorcycle spatial awareness. Yes, as cool and futuristic as it sounds, some motorcycles are able to determine where in space they are, relative to certain set parameters, and are thus able to adjust several elements in order to deliver optimized performance.

More particularly, the IMU focuses on six axes, namely left and right lean, left and right yaw, and forward and rearward pitch. This unlocks tons of amazing performance-oriented features such as multiple dynamic riding modes, cornering ABS, cornering traction control, cornering lights, and even slide and wheelie control. As crazy as it sounds, the IMU gives the bike the ability to prevent crashes and keep tabs on performance, especially for more inexperienced riders. Who knows, maybe the IMU will eventually make motorcycles completely autonomous?

Radar-powered adaptive cruise control

KTM 1290 Super Adventure

Speaking of autonomy, this feature is quite possibly the closest thing to fully autonomous motorcycles currently available. Motorcycles like the Ducati Multistrada V4 and KTM 1290 Super Adventure feature adaptive cruise control powered by radar technology. An onboard radar is able to detect obstacles in the motorcycle’s surroundings, and adjust its speed accordingly in order to avoid a collision. Furthermore, radar systems are capable of sensing the lines on the road, allowing high-end bikes to come with lane-keep assist functionality. This cutting-edge feature makes tackling long rides on the highway a walk in the park.

Active suspension

Kawasaki Skyhook Suspension

Active suspension is definitely a feature performance-oriented riders will love. As the name suggests, active suspension means that the motorcycle’s suspension system will automatically adjust depending on the road and load conditions. For instance, some bikes have the ability to sense when a passenger is onboard, and will automatically adjust rear spring preload. Meanwhile, other bikes, such as the Ducati Street Fighter V4, have their electronic suspension systems linked to riding modes. This means you could have softer suspension settings for street mode, stiffer settings for sport mode, and even a custom setting which you can tune to your liking.
