Here are a few things to expect from the revived Moto Guzzi Stelvio

The Stelvio is set to make a comeback, as foreshadowed by Moto Guzzi at EICMA 2022

Here are a few things to expect from the revived Moto Guzzi Stelvio

The Moto Guzzi Stelvio is an adventure touring bike that was produced from 2007 to 2016. The Stelvio had proven to be a capable big-bore ADV machine with the likes of the R 1200 GS and KTM 1190 Adventure, but seemed to always veer to the more unique side of the spectrum. In 2016, just in time for the Euro 4 move, the Stelvio eventually came to its demise, as the bike’s rather lackluster sales numbers were cited as one of the reasons why Moto Guzzi pulled the plug on the bike.

However, at EICMA 2022, it seemed that things were about to change. While the entirety of Moto Guzzi’s model range was proudly on display, there was something in the side of their booth that hinted at an upcoming model—a big adventure bike that would likely slot itself above the brand’s sole adventurer, the V85TT. Indeed, the V85TT is one of Moto Guzzi’s best bikes, and undoubtedly a capable adventure-tourer. That said, if and when the all-new Stelvio were to hit the market, what exactly could we expect? Well, for now, all we can do is speculate, and speculate we shall.

Powerful middleweight performance

From a practicality standpoint, the likelihood of Moto Guzzi actually developing a new platform—chassis and engine—for the new Stelvio seems pretty slim. So, chances are the bike will be sporting an engine we’ve already seen before. We can’t expect the bike to be sporting the same 1,200cc engine it did in the past, as it was axed specifically because it failed to meet Euro 4 parameters. As such, one could reason to guess that the new Stelvio would be powered by the same engine in the V100 Mandello, a 1,042cc, transversely mounted V-twin engine.

Indeed, this seems to be the agreed upon speculation by a lot of journals and publications in Europe, and if Moto Guzzi were to make this a reality, we could be in for a solid mid to heavyweight contender in the ADV segment. For reference, in the V100 Mandello, this engine produces 115 horsepower and 73 lb-ft of torque—similar to power figures we find in the KTM 890 Adventure, Ducati Multistrada V2, and BMW F 850 GS.

Impressive tech features

At this point, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what sort of tech features the upcoming Moto Guzzi Stelvio will be bringing to the table. However, if we look at the V100 Mandello, it’s clear that the brand has been investing heavily in improving its technology. As such, in the case of the Stelvio, we can likely expect it to come outfitted with a slew of adventurous goodies that categorize it as a premium, top-tier ADV machine. Expect the bike to be fitted with an adjustable windscreen, adjustable suspension, and perhaps even a full-color TFT display and multiple ride modes, like what we get in the V85TT. Of course, the essential safety features such as ABS and traction control—with the likely addition of IMU-powered cornering functionality—will almost certainly be present.

Moto Guzzi Character

Moto Guzzi has always been one of those manufacturers who defied convention. Instead of focusing on sheer performance and technology, Moto Guzzi always had a penchant for feel, character, soul, and other more intangible aspects of motorcycling. This is the reason why the brand’s loyalists support the brand so strongly. As such, there has always been this fine-tuned character that has accompanied Moto Guzzi’s bikes—something you’d expect to find in a finely crafted timepiece, or a vintage musical instrument. Needless to say, it would be truly exciting to see such a character translated into the mid to heavyweight adventure bike segment, and maybe, just maybe, the Stelvio could be just that.
